Thames Lido opens today in Reading
The long-awaited Thames Lido opened today on the site of the historical Kings Meadow Baths in Reading. After 43 years in a state of disrepair and near demolition, the team behind the award-winning Lido in Bristol have spent over four years renovating the Grade II listed baths into a spa, outdoor pool, restaurant, bar and event space. The very first swimmers queued up all vying to be the first in the pool – just gone midday today.
Executive chef of the Lido Bristol Freddy Bird and his team have been preparing the huge kitchen for a soft launch this week. A number of soft opening events were held last week and the team were able to practice on the two huge wood-fired ovens and fire pit in the open kitchen overlooking the bar and pool. The menu echoes the style of the Bristol kitchens with dishes that focus on the provenance of ingredients primarily cooked over fire.
The spa facilities at the Thames Lido have also opened for bookings – with the treatments focusing on quality of service and centred on relaxation, indulgence and a healthy love of the outdoors.
The focal point of the Thames Lido is the beautiful 25 metre outdoor heated pool that will be open all year, 7 days a week from 6am to 10pm. Smith & Baxter were lucky (or unlucky… depends how you look at it) enough to swim in the pool before it was heated last week. It was refreshing but certainly made the post-swim sauna even more worth it!
