Acclaimed documentary photographer Zed Nelson takes an up close and personal view of the borough he has spent most of his life living in. His new book A Portrait of Hackney is an honest photo essay about the confusion of cultures, clash of identities and the beauty and ugliness that co-exist in the area today. From canal-side drinks to a tragic drive-by shooting, from hipsters in the park to Hackney’s hidden wildlife in the shadow of the Olympic Park, the book chronicles modern Hackney life. Portraits and landscapes are set against overheard snippets of conversations in the area throwing up the contrasts, juxtapositions and peculiarities that are unique to this part of the East End.
