The Sportsman wins André Simon Food Book Award 2017
We are happy to announce that one of our favourite projects from 2017, The Sportsman by Stephen Harris, has won the André Simon Food Book Award for 2017. The award was presented to Stephen at the award ceremony last night, held at the The Goring Hotel, London.
Announcing the winner, British journalist and food writer, Rachel Cooke, this year’s assessor for food books, said: “The kind of book you want to win a prize like this must capture a moment, say something about where we are, as well as being inspirational, well-written, useful and expert. The Sportsman does that. Its interest in, and passion for, provenance is going to seem ever more relevant in the years to come, post Brexit. It’s a singularly British book, and yet it looks outward, with hope. Stephen Harris, who has worked with such dedication and commitment to make his restaurant one of our truly great places, couldn’t deserve this award more.’’
Stephen remarked on winning the award. “I was delighted with the win last night. But since looking at all the past winners of the Andre Simon Awards – I now realise I am in truly exceptional company. Food heroes from past and present and writers who have influenced my own writing have all been recipients of these distinguished awards.”
